RESOURCES

According to some earlier research, the area of Berkovići ranks among the sunniest places in Europe. Research shows that Berkovići have the annual amount of insolation is from 2,500 to 3,166 hours. This natural advantage could be used for the production of electricity, as well as wind power. Based on research by the Belgrade University Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, it was determined that the settlements of Hrgud and Trusina hold an opportunity to use the wind for the production of electricity through the construction of wind parks. Research has shown that a 129 MW wind park can be built in the area of Hrgud, while a wind park with an installed power of 63 MW can be built in the area of Donja Trusina. The construction of the small hydropower plant Do, with an installed capacity of 2 MW, utilized the hydro potential available to the municipality of Berkovići. Regarding natural resources, it is very important to note the importance of arable land. The Dabarsko polje area of 50 km² and the altitude of 470-550 m favor the production of grains and fodder plants, and fruit plantations also gave good results. The big problem is that most of this field is covered by water in late autumn and early spring, while the rest is suitable for cultivation throughout the year. This problem exceeds the resources and capabilities of the municipality of Berkovići. Households are mainly engaged in agriculture and growing vegetables. Bacteriological, radiological, and chemical tests were carried out at the springs of Bregava and Pribit. The results of these analyses show that the water is of excellent quality, category A. The locality of Kalina, where the deposit of brick clay is located, has a good position in terms of communications. Brick clay consists of sedimentary formations created by the decomposition of the surrounding rocks, and they occupy an area of 20 km², of which only 30 hectares have been covered by detailed geological research. There are two basic types of clay: dark yellow, sandy, and dark gray marl. The deposit has all the necessary elements for the exploitation of the useful substance - the surface mining method of the hill-valley type. The quality of the clay is such that it can be used for the production of ceramics. According to classification indicators, this deposit belongs to the second group of brick-clay deposits. The site was analyzed. Another underutilized natural resource of the municipality of Berkovići is building stone. There are four surveyed sites for the use of building stone, three concession permits (two sites are in exploitation), and a request for concession permits has been submitted for the fourth site. Also, in the municipality of Berkovići, there are countless sites where gravel and lime could be produced. Until the outbreak of war, the exploitation of high-quality bauxite ore was carried out in the Dabrica mine. Surface and pit mines are abundant with reserves of around 1,000,000 t. Elaborations have been made. The ore is of good quality and contains 50 to 56% aluminum and 0.5 to 4% silicon. The municipality of Berkovići has significant tourist potential, which is reflected in the preserved environment, rich historical and cultural heritage, rural, hunting and adventure tourism. The grounds are suitable for paragliding, hiking (possibility of building ferratas), extreme sports, cycling (primarily mountain), and numerous birds and other small and large game are a prerequisite for the development of hunting tourism. Traditional dishes such as bellows cheese and the possibility of producing healthy food in small rural households favor the development of rural tourism. The old town of Koštun (Greek: Kostran and Latin: Kostrum - camp) from the early Middle Ages, built of very large stones, was declared a national BiH monument in 2004. There are also a large number of stećak necropolises in Podkom (Potkom), Hatelji and Dabrica. Practically every village has a stećak necropolis. The stećak necropolis in Donja Bitunja (Potkuk) is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Stećak Necropolis of Radovac in Podkom was declared by the Republika Srpska Government as a cultural asset of great importance. Many caves and karst pits may be interesting for tourists, but many of these natural forms have not been sufficiently investigated or have not been investigated at all. In the village of Podkom, there is the Ratkovača cave, which has been partially explored by the locals. Next to the cave, there is an attractive waterfall (active in winter) about 150 m high, which turns into a fascinating ice figure in harsher winter conditions. Straževica elevation is an artificially created mound on a mountain peak that rises to a height of about 1,050 m above Dabarsko polje. According to tradition, there is a buried church in which there is gold. The same tradition says that all excavation attempts were unsuccessful and that anyone who did this work would have some misfortune in their family. Every year in the summer, a church ceremony is held in the newly built chapel next to the hill. As a natural phenomenon, under the mound, at a distance of 50 meters, there is a source of drinking water that never dries up. In the village of Podkom there are remains of the church of St. Ilija, which dates back to the 14th or 15th century. The founders of this church were the noble family of Pićević. How the church was discovered is interesting. There is the testimony of the villagers, who had a vision of a priest in a dream telling them that there used to be a church in their village and that stone should not be taken from the said pile for houses, but that they should uncover it and fence it, and that the troubles they had then in the village would end. Soon they gathered and together, already at the first action, they came across the wall of the old church and inside it a tomb covered with a stone slab. Since then, Father Simeon has established a service on the Ognjena Marija Day (en. Saint Margaret of Antioch in the West, and as Saint Marina the Great Martyr).
