Thanks to the efforts of the Municipality of Berkovići, the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republika Srpska, as well as people of good will, the "Narodna biblioteka Berkovići" Public Library was formed and started operating in 2002. It is located in the very center of the Municipality, in the former premises of the local office. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral, the Healthcare Center and the RS Post Office.
From its establishment in 2002 until 2009, the library was managed by Radmila Šinik. From 2009 until today, this public institution has been managed by Radenko Kojović. In the early days, for the work of this institution, one of the most important tasks was the collection of library materials. Thanks to people of good will, a significant number of new titles have been collected. Among the most important donors, then and later, we can single out the Elementary School "United Nations" from Belgrade whose director is our compatriot Janko Ćupina, ISM "Oktoih" Podgorica, Radio Television of Serbia, "National Library of Serbia", "Association of Serbs of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Serbia", National Mostar Library (Director Julijana Pavlović), Dr. Goran Ž. Komar, Herceg Novi City Library, numerous other institutions, associations, organizations, etc.
In 2005, through the implementation of a series of projects, the library got a new roof and expanded the work space, which significantly contributed to improved working conditions. In 2007, the project of installing a heating system was realized, which further improved the working conditions. Another project implemented in 2010-2011, the library got an open summer reading room with 10 reading places, which was expanded and adapted into a closed facility with appropriate equipment in 2016. The number of reading places increased to 60, and this space enabled the library to organize and hold literary evenings, book promotions, performances, and other cultural events.
Today, the library has around 26,500 library items. The book fund is rich and diverse. This is why the library is able to meet the needs of all users (from the youngest to the oldest). During 2023, the "University Library" within the cultural center "Ivan Kosača" in Mostar donated 350 new titles, among which were works of classical Russian, Serbian, English and American literature. Also among the donated titles are several encyclopedias, literary reviews and professional literature.
The entire fund was arranged according to the UDK system and is freely accessible.
The library has an electronic catalog that is under construction. It organizes literary evenings, promotions, lectures and other cultural events. It is a member of the Republika Srpska Association of Librarians. For its successful operation, it received recognition from the Municipality of Berkovići and from the Republika Srpska National and University Library. This institution will continue to systematically collect, preserve, process and make available materials and information to all citizens, regardless of religious, ideological, age, professional and other differences, with the aim of spreading education and upbringing, cultural and scientific development.
