The elementary school in Berkovići, immediately before the war, functioned as part of the Elementary School "Ragib Dizdar" Stolac. Elementary school in Berkovići has been operating in the education system of Republika Srpska since 1992, and it got its current name "Njegoš" Elementary School in Berkovići in 1993. After the end of the war, the central building and individual buildings of the regional departments were reconstructed. Due to the constant decline in the number of students, caused by negative natural growth, which is encountered by every local community in Republika Srpska, the number of regional classes gradually decreased. Today, classes in Berkovići take place in the central building and two regional departments (Blaca and Dabrica).

In the devastating earthquakes that hit the municipality of Berkovići in 2022, the central building of Elementary School "Njegoš" Berkovići suffered significant damage. With funds donated by the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for the purpose of rehabilitating buildings damaged in the earthquake, the building was completely renovated, and the value of the works amounted to 292,090 KM. The roof structure was replaced, most of the classrooms were completely renovated, the floors and interior joinery were replaced... By renovating the school space, working conditions were improved. Elementary school "Njegoš" Berkovići, which has 23 employees, is attended by 160 students.
