About Berkovići

The municipality of Berkovići is a border municipality in eastern Herzegovina, in the southeast of Republika Srpska, i.e. in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It extends over an area of ​​264 km², at an altitude of 100m-1300m. It is located on the regional road R427 Stolac-Berkovići-Bileća. 

Before the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the municipality itself was part of the municipality of Stolac. The center of the municipality, the Berkovići settlement, had 159 residents in 1991, so it was a small settlement with a relatively low level of development. The current area of ​​the municipality of Berkovići was the least developed part of the pre-war municipality of Stolac. From the moment they received the status of a municipality in Republika Srpska, Berkovići experienced rapid and dynamic development, first solving the problems of road and utility infrastructure, and then public services and economic development. Now they already have an organized municipal center and a solid connection within the municipality and with the surrounding area. 

The municipality of Berkovići belongs to the group of extremely underdeveloped municipalities in Republika Srpska. According to data from the 2013 Census, in 2013, 2,041 residents lived in the municipality of Berkovići, of which 1,032 were men and 1,009 were women in 636 households, with 1,040 apartments. The average number of household members was 3.21. According to the age structure, the majority of the population is in the age group of 15-65 years (58%), a total of 1,217 (of which 627 men and 590 women). There are 517 or 25% of the total population (218 men and 299 women) over the age of 65 in the municipality, while there are only 17%, or 357 (187 men and 170 women) under the age of 15. The average age of the residents of the municipality is 44.25, where the average age of women is slightly higher and is 45.83, while the average age of men is 42.70. 


The municipality of Berkovići has no established local communities, and the population of the municipality lives in 17 settlements (Berkovići, Bitunja, Brštanik, Dabrica, Do, Žegulja, Ljubnjenica, Ljuti Do, Meča, Predolje, Stupići, Suzina, Trusina, Hatelji, Hodovo, Hrgud, Šćepan Krst). The most populated settlement is Berkovići (230 residents according to the 2013 Census, while the least populated settlement is Brštanik (1 resident according to the 2013 census). The population density of the municipality is 7.03 people/km² and compared to 2013, when it was 7.73 people/km², it is slightly lower. 
The municipality of Berkovići is one of the most sparsely populated municipalities in Republika Srpska, where the average population density is 45.6 people/km².
